[Tennis_Sampras] FEATURE INTERVIEW: Pete Sampras reflects on his glittering,
14 Grand Slam career

SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think I would have loved the challenge in my prime to go up against him (Roger Federer). It would have been a great clash. My game, coming in and attacking while Roger is more from the baseline, great passing shots and he moves great. It's too bad that we just missed each other for a few years there. We played one time at Wimbledon, he beat me in five which was a tough loss. Whenever I see Roger play, when I am at home, I see how would I play him? You just have to try to come in and for me I would have to try and overwhelm him with some of my power like I did against Andre (Agassi) and some of the other greats I played. So it would have been a challenge and it would have been fun. I would have loved it." SUPERCAPTION: Pete Sampras, winner of 14 Grand Slam titles. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Wimbledon is the one I really miss. And the US Open. Those four weeks are still weeks that I miss. Other than that I don't miss the day in day out grind of tennis, I don't miss the travelling, I don't miss the pressure, I don't miss the stress of being a top player. But when Wimbledon comes around, I can still feel playing there and playing those finals. But other than those weeks I'm ok." SUPERCAPTION: Pete Sampras, seven-time Wimbledon champion. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I stopped (retired) on top and that was great. I beat Andre (agassi, in the US Open final) in 1990 and then finished (as a US Open winner) in 2002. I had been through two years of not playing well, losing confidence, and I questioned myself a little bit after that Wimbledon loss in 2002. To come back two months later and beat Andre in the final (of the 2002 US Open) was probably the best achievement of my career. To be as low as you can be, to come back to win it and once I had won it there was nothing left to do and nothing left to prove to myself. It was time for me to move on and see what was next. But all the majors in between were special but the last couple, especially that last one. It felt like vindication because everyone wrote me off for a year or so and it felt sweet."
