  • Yet yet to make his competitive debut for Los Angeles Galaxy, David Beckham was named on the bench for the trip to DC United in the MLS on Thursday. With the England midfielder still on the sidelines, the home side took a 27th-minute lead after Luciano Emilio's shot slipped through the grasp of Joe Cannon. Midway through the second half, the Galaxy were reduced to ten men after Kyle Martino was shown a red card for a crude challenge on Fred. Five minutes later came the moment that soccer fans across America had been waiting for. Beckham put on his number 23 shirt, before coming on in place of Quavas Kirk. After a frustrating time with an ankle injury since arriving in the USA, Beckham was eager to get involved from his position in the centre of the field. His free-kick almost brought Galaxy an equaliser via the head of Carlos Pavon. Two minutes later, a superb through-ball picked out Landon Donovan. Despite an impressive 18 minutes on the pitch though, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was unable to prevent a 1-0 defeat for the Galaxy. SOUNDBITE (English) "We knew what they could do. We knew that they're strong up front and they're quick and they're good on the ball and they capitalised on that. They got a goal and stuck in there. We had a couple of chances at the end but we're disappointed."
