With Jaime Moreno on duty with Bolivia, D.C. United were without their captain for the visit of Real Salt Lake to Washington's R.F.K. Stadium on Wednesday. However, that didn't stop the hosts taking the lead just after a quarter-of-an-hour. Christian Gomez lifted a cross to the far post where Luciano Emilio leapt highest to head home his 18th goal of the season. Salt Lake, though, hit back through Kyle Beckerman. The midfielder's 32nd-minute drive beat the despairing dive of D.C. 'keeper Troy Perkins. Salt Lake had looked the better side in the first 45 minutes, but the home team won the game in the 73rd minute. Fred's far-post cross found Gomez who netted his seventh goal of the season. With no defeats in nine matches, D.C. are the first team to clinch a place in the M.L.S. play-offs, Real, in contrast, are eliminated from play-off contention.
