  • After years of denial, Marion Jones came clean on Friday and admitted at the U.S. District Court in New York that she had used steroids during her career and had lied to federal investigators when asked about them. SOUNDBITE: (English) "And so it is with a great amount of shame that I stand before you and tell you that I have betrayed your trust." SUPER CAPTION: Marion Jones. An emotional Jones pleaded guilty to two counts of making false statements to federal agents when she denied using performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. Jones said she took steroids from September 2000 to July 2001 and said she was told by her then coach Trevor Graham that she was taking flaxseed oil when it was actually THG - a performance-enhancing drug linked to BALCO, the laboratory at the centre of several steroids scandals in a wide range of professional sports. Jones had even sued BALCO founder Victor Conte after he accused her of using performance-enhancing drugs, and she continued to vehemently deny all doping allegations. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I have never, ever failed a drug test. I have taken over 160 drug tests. I have taken tests before, during and after the 2000 Olympics and have never failed a test." SUPERCAPTION: Marion Jones. On Friday though, Jones admitted that those statements were in fact, lies. The three-times Olympic gold medallist apologised for her actions and announced her immediate retirement from track and field. Prosecutors have suggested to Jones that she could face a prison term of six months. It's likely she will be stripped of the five medals she won in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
