After a one-nil victory in their play-off first leg, Chicago Fire just needed a draw against D.C. United on Thursday night to reach the MLS Eastern Conference final. The Fire made their position even stronger with two first-half strikes. First, Calen Carr's inch-perfect pass found Chad Barrett who lashed the ball home. Just two minutes later, MVP candidate Cuauhtemoc Blanco headed on to Chris Rolfe for Rolfe's second goal of the series. After a sprained ankle that caused him to appear as a late substitute last week, D.C.'s Luciano Emilio - the league's top scorer - was replaced in the 65th minute. But United still managed a late rally. Clyde Simms' long-range shot made it 2-1 in the 69th minute. Five minutes later, substitute Rod Dyachenko set up Christian Gomez who beat the offside trap to tie the match. Gomez thought he'd scored a third for D.C. in the dying seconds of injury-time, but the referee disallowed the goal after several Fire players appealed for handball. Chicago progress with their final opponents coming from the tie between the New York Red Bulls and New England Revolution.
