Washington's RFK Stadium staged the Major League Soccer Cup final on Sunday, with Houston Dynamo looking to defend the trophy they won a year ago. Opponents New England Revolution had lost on their three previous appearances in the MLS Cup final, but took a 1-0 lead in this match through Taylor Twellman. It was Twellman's sixth goal in his last seven play-off games. The Revolution held their advantage into the break, but Houston scrambled an equaliser just after the hour mark. Brian Mullan's cross was poorly dealt with by the defence and Dwayne De Rosario cut the ball back for Joseph Ngwenya to finish. Thirteen minutes later, De Rosario went from provider to scorer. Brad Davis chipped the ball into the penalty area and De Rosario's snap header gave Matt Reis no chance. Jeff Larentowicz's late header was saved by Pat Onstad to preserve the Dynamo's precious lead. Houston triumphed 2-1, becoming the first back-to-back champions since D.C. United won the competition's first two titles in 1996 and 1997.
