An intimidating atmosphere greeted Bolton Wanderers in Belgrade on Thursday, as they took on 1991 European champions Red Star in UEFA Cup Group F. The home side dominated the opening period and could have gone three up, but Bolton 'keeper Ali Al-Habsi was at his very best. This catch from Nenad Jestrovic's header was the pick of a series of saves. Wanderers' boss Gary Megson, who had left six regular first-team members at home, saw his side take the lead on the stroke of half-time. Gary Speed's header was parried, but Stelios Giannakopoulos set up Gavin McCann to score his first goal since a summer move from Aston Villa. The strike completely deflated Red Star, and they offered little attacking threat in the second half, enabling the visitors to record a famous 1-0 win. Bolton top Group F, but Bayern Munich, Aris Salonika and FC Braga are all still in the hunt for one of two qualification places.
