Egypt's footballers continued to celebrate their Africa Cup of Nations triumph on Monday as they were welcomed home by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. In Cairo, Mubarak congratulated captain Ahmed Hassan and his team on a record sixth Cup of Nations triumph, following Sunday's 1-0 win over Cameroon in Ghana. This man, Mohamed Aboutrika, hit the only goal of the game in Accra to lead the Pharaohs to a successful defence of their title. After posing for photographs with Mubarak, the victorious team boarded a bus to be hailed by fans still eager to celebrate the historic win. Egypt have now been crowned African champions in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006 and 2008. It remains to be seen whether coach Hassan Shehata will try to lead Egypt to a third successive title when the tournament is held in Angola in 2010. And, more importantly, whether Shehata will coach Egypt in their attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
