a row.
In a somewhat below-par performance, Manchester United prevail to beat Lyon 1-0 in the champions league. Cristiano Ronaldo's strike enough to see off the French champions and enough to please his manager. SOUNDBITE: Alex Ferguson (English) "I think it was a good European football match, with a good flow to the game, end to end at times. But really the big opportunities fell to us." The Red Devils certainly didn't play to their full ability but opposition coach Alain Perrin nonetheless felt they deserved their win. SOUNDBITE: Alain Perrin (French) 2:51 - "it's beyond question that Manchester United should have gone through. You can't argue with the fact Manchester United deserved to win over the two legs." Although Utd may not have been superb, they did enough to make it to the quarter-finals in early April. --------------------------------------- CHOSEN SOUNDBITES FOR NO-SPEAK --------------------------------------- SOUNDBITE: Alex Ferguson (English) "I think it was a good European football match, with a good flow to the game, end to end at times. Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the winner to take his tally to 30 goals in all competitions so far this season as United beat the French league leaders 2-1 on aggregate. The win equals the record of 10 successive home Champions League victories, held by Italian side Juventus. SUGGESTED VOICEOVER: Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson was in buoyant mood at a post-match press conference, following his sides impressive 1-0 win (2-1 aggregate) over French side Lyon in the last 16 of the Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Apart from the shot from Keita that hit the post, I don't think they really made a chance. I think it was a good European football match, with a good flow to the game, end to end at times. But really the big opportunities fell to us. It's a pity we couldn't put the game to rest early, but you know that's European games." SUPER CAPTION: Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager With Arsenal through, following a 2-0 win over holders AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday, and Chelsea and Liverpool also expected to gain a place in the last eight, the chances of an all-English fixture in the quarter-finals are highly likely. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well if Liverpool get through, and I expect Chelsea to get through of course, but if Liverpool get through then there's a forty percent chance of getting one of the English teams. So I don't think it matters who you play, I think they are all difficult games. That's why the quarter final is full of good teams. We'll just have to wait, the important thing is that we are there ourselves." SUPER CAPTION: Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager The result was also notable in that it allowed the 'Red Devils' to equal the current record of ten successive home Champions League victories, held by Italian side Juventus. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well it's an achievement there's no question of that. To equal Juventus's record of ten victories. I think there are several things that helped. I think our support of European nights is very very good. Most of the time in the Champions League our home record has been very very good, and that is demonstrated by what you are talking about, ten wins in a row. It's a great achievement. The big advantage for us tonight, the pitch is now over its January hiccup, which it always has, and is much better, that is a definite advantage to us now. So I'm pleased our home record persists and I hope it persists the rest of the season." SUPER CAPTION: Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager Despite the defeat Lyon manager Alain Perrin was eager to voice his admiration and respect for the opposition. SOUNDBITE: (French) "I think that possibly from the effort we put in we may have deserved more but it's beyond question that Manchester United should have gone through. You can't argue with the fact Manchester United deserved to win over the two legs, but I think the value of our performance will be shown in the long term."
