(LEAD) Kia releases teaser images of new Sorento SUV

SEOUL, July 29 (Yonhap) -- Kia Motors Corp. released the first teaser images of its new Sorento SUV on Tuesday ahead of its global launch set for the second half of this year.

The two images showing front three-quarter and rear three-quarter views of the midsize SUV highlight a muscular profile that is at once sporty and upscale. The images are somewhat reminiscent of an enlarged Sportage R SUV, with its bold "Tiger nose" grille and firm shoulder lines. The Sportage slots below the Sorento in Kia's corporate lineup.

The vehicle also sports raked-back headlamps and wrap-around LED tail lights, with blacked-out B and C pillars and a sharply angled rear quarter window that merges with a substantial D pillar. It is topped at the rear with a spoiler over the back windows.

South Korea's No. 2 carmaker claimed the "future oriented" design of the third generation Sorento emphasizes confidence and refinement.

Kia said that it placed emphasis on meeting growing demand for cars that can cater to the active lifestyles of consumers as well as satisfy everyday practicality and safety needs. The car's overall length has grown 90 millimeters, with the wheelbase gaining 80 mm, providing more room for passengers. The longer wheelbase should help improve the driving dynamics of the car.

The company, part of Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth largest automotive conglomerate, said 53 percent of the SUV's frame is made of high tensile steel for better torsional rigidity and crashworthiness.

It added that the amount of advanced structural adhesives, or load-bearing adhesives, used on the structure is twice that found in its nearest competitor. Structural adhesives help with rigidity and sound prevention.

"The new Sorento is very attractive in terms of design, overall value and will effectively hold onto its title as a leader in the domestic SUV market," a Kia executive said. He did not give details on the official unveiling for the home market, but hinted that it could take place in August or early September.

The Sorento was first launched in 2002, with the second generation model reaching the market in 2009. It has sold more than 2 million units as of last month, and has played a role in making Kia a player in the global SUV segment.
