KAI partners develop aerospace softwares
SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Yonhap) -- Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. (KAI), South Korea's sole aircraft manufacturer and total system integrator, said Monday that its partner companies have successfully developed key aircraft-related softwares that can reduce the country's dependence on foreign programs.
The company located in Sacheon, a city 437 kilometers southeast of Seoul, said that the six companies that are members of the Aerospace IT Innovation Center (AITIC) have developed softwares such as navigation for use in civilian helicopters, power modules for anti-submarine warfare aircraft and imbedded training software for drones.
"The results come only a year after the center was set up and after KAI and the six companies received 1.8 billion won in state support," the aerospace company said.
It said the software created could make it possible for the country to do away with 32.8 billion won ($31.5 million) worth of imports through 2020.
The companies are D2 Innovation, Huone Inc., Korea Defense Aerospace (KODEA), JNS, Navcours and Korea Cyber Engineering Innovation.
Of the softwares developed, a three-dimensional navigation system with 50 centimeter resolution has been used on the Surion chopper supplied to the country's police force.
KAI said the navigation system built by KODEA is a "world first" and could generate 4 billion won in earnings for the company in the next six years.
It said that besides the navigation software, the AITIC partners will likely earn 370 billion won in the next 15 years from products they have made so far.
The forecast comes as the global aerospace IT market is expected to expand to $313.9 billion by 2017 from $84.5 billion in 2012.
KAI said that it has tapped another five local companies to make various softwares that can be used on drones, improving avionics and other applications.
It said that South Korea's prowess in the IT sector as a whole is helping companies make headway in aviation related software areas.
