Woman nabbed for 5,000 emergency center prank calls
SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Yonhap) -- A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on charges of making prank calls to emergency call centers nearly 5,000 times under the influence of alcohol, police said Tuesday.
The suspect, only identified by her surname Song, is accused of making the bogus or joke calls to the 112 emergency call centers 4,654 times between January 2010 and July 2014, according to Seoul's Dobong Police Station.
Song threatened to kill herself or falsely claimed that she had found a dead body, prompting officers and patrol cars to be deployed, officers said.
"I made false calls when I was drunk," Song was quoted by a police officer as saying during police interrogation.
Under the current law, those who make prank or false calls to police authorities face fines of less than 100,000 won (US$90). Only those deemed habitual prank callers or who cause large damages face stronger punishments of up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.
Police said they are considering filing a damages suit against Song for losses incurred from the hoax calls.
