(LEAD) Seoul shares down 0.77 pct on global economic woes

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks ended 0.77 percent lower Tuesday as gloomy economic prospects locally as well as in the eurozone sapped investor sentiment, analysts said. The South Korean won gained against the U.S. dollar.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 14.78 points to 1,915.28. Trading volume was moderate at 396.83 million shares worth 4.28 trillion won (US$4.06 billion), with decliners beating gainers 464 to 342.

(LEAD) Korean won rises to 3-week high vs dollar on appetite for risky assets

SEOUL -- The South Korean won rose to a three-week high against the U.S. dollar, gaining for the second consecutive day as demand for risky assets increased amid hopes that the U.S. Federal Reserve would delay much-awaited rate hikes.

The Korean won closed at 1,054.70 to the greenback, up 4.9 won from the previous session's close, after rising to as high as 1,053.00 won at one point.

Restart of high-level talks key to inter-Korean ties: minister

SEOUL -- South Korea's point man on North Korea emphasized the importance of another round of high-level contact between the two sides on Tuesday, saying it could put inter-Korean relations into a fresh phase.

"If the South and the North hold talks, almost all issues can be resolved," Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-Jae said in a lecture here to a meeting of the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation.

S. Korea to deploy low-altitude radar system amid N. Korean drone threat

SEOUL -- South Korea will deploy a low-altitude radar system late this year to guard the country against low-elevation military penetrations such as North Korean drones, defense officials said Tuesday.

Starting at the end of this year, the military will deploy three-dimension low-altitude radars, developed by local defense firm LIG Nex 1, for actual combat position, according to the officials.

(LEAD) Doosan Bears name former captain as new manager

SEOUL -- Following a disappointing season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), the Doosan Bears on Tuesday announced their former captain Kim Tae-hyung as new manager.

Kim, 47, replaces Song Il-soo, who lasted only one season on the Bears' bench. On Song's watch, the Bears were just 59-68-1 and finished 3.5 games out of the postseason, a year after they lost to the Samsung Lions in the championship Korean Series.

Samsung mass-produces 8-gigabit DRAM for biz servers

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday it has started mass-producing 8-gigabit memory modules for business users, expanding its presence from the personal computer chip industry to the enterprise market.

The 8-gigabit DDR4 memory module, the most advanced in the industry, is based on 20-nanometer technology with a 30-percent faster data processing speed of 2,400 megabits per second, the company said in a statement.
