'Gray divorce' hit record high in 2013: data
SEOUL, Oct. 22 (Yonhap) -- The divorce rate among couples married for 20 years or longer, so-called gray divorces, surged to a record high last year, data showed Wednesday.
Older-age divorces have been on a steady rise in the country for the past five years, with 32,433 such couples ending their marriages in 2013, according to the annual data released by the Supreme Court.
The country had 30,234 gray divorces in 2012, compared with 28,299 in 2011 and 27,823 in 2010, the data added.
Gray divorces accounted for the largest portion of the total, with the percentage jumping from 22.8 to 28.1 percent over the past five years, the data added.
Personality differences was the top reason for last year's divorces, with other reasons including economic difficulties and spouse infidelity, according to the data.
Meanwhile, the number of newlyweds has inched down steadily over the past three years, the data showed.
A total of 325,016 couples tied the knot in 2013, a 1.3 percent decrease from 329,220 from a year earlier, it said.
