U.S. envoy to visit Seoul next week for talks on NK nukes

SEOUL -- The U.S. special envoy on North Korea policy will visit South Korea late next week to discuss Pyongyang's much-denounced nuclear weapons program following a high-ranking North Korean official's recent trip to Russia, diplomatic sources said Friday.

Sung Kim's visit, scheduled for late next week, will be the first trip to Seoul by the former U.S. ambassador to South Korea since he was named the special representative for North Korea policy and deputy assistant secretary of state for Korea and Japan last month.

(2nd LD) S. Korea's industrial output shrinks in Oct.

SEJONG -- South Korea's industrial output shrank in October from a month earlier, affected by sluggish activities in the manufacturing sector, a government report showed Friday.

According to the report by Statistics Korea, production in the mining, manufacturing, gas and electricity industries dropped 1.6 percent last month from a month earlier. Compared with a year earlier, it fell 3.2 percent.

S. Korean manufacturers' confidence up for Dec.: poll

SEOUL -- Business sentiment among South Korean manufacturers remained in negative territory for December but posted a small improvement compared with the outlook for this month, a poll showed Friday.

The business sentiment index, which measures manufacturers' outlook on their business conditions for the coming month, came in at 75 for December compared with 74 for November, according to the Bank of Korea.

(LEAD) U.S. film on NK leader to hit screens next month

SEOUL -- A controversial American movie on an assassination plot targeting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will hit the screens in 63 countries starting late next month, a U.S. news report said Friday.

The comedy, titled "The Interview," will be released in the U.S. and Canada on Dec. 25 before hitting the screens in European, Middle Eastern and African countries early next year, the Washington-based Voice of America (VOA) said, citing the movie's distributor Sony Pictures.

S. Korean Navy receives new amphibious landing ship

SEOUL -- The South Korean Navy took delivery Friday of the country's first indigenous next-generation amphibious landing ship expected to boost the military's landing and transportation capabilities, the state arms procurer said.

The 4,500-ton LTS-II ship Cheonwangbong, named after the country's second-highest peak of Mount Jiri in the southern region, had been built with the country's own technology by shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. since 2011.

(LEAD) N. Korean leader extols female fighter jet pilots

SEOUL, Nov. 28 (Yonhap) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un observed a flight drill of the country's first female pilots of pursuit planes, Pyongyang's state media reported Friday.

Kim instructed the full-scale training of those highly skilled airwomen himself, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Seoul shares trade lower in late morning session

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks traded lower late morning Friday on losses in shipbuilders and oil refiners as falling crude oil prices darkened their profit outlook, analysts said.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) moved down 0.19 percent, or 3.69 points, to 1,978.4 as of 11:20 a.m.
