Two S. Koreans grab gold medals at ISU World Cup on home ice
SEOUL, Dec. 20 (Yonhap) -- Two South Koreans grabbed gold medals at the International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track Speed Skating World Cup competition on home ice on Saturday.
Sin Da-woon captured the men's 1,500m race, while Choi Min-jeong took the women's 3,000m title at the fourth leg of the World Cup series at Mokdong Ice Rink in western Seoul.
Sin has won four individual gold medals so far in the ongoing World Cup season, along with two relay titles. For Choi, a 16-year-old in her first senior season, it was her third individual World Cup title.
In the men's 1,500m final, Sin finished in 2:20.755, with Chen Dequan of China ending in second at 2:20.835. Another South Korean, Park Se-yeong, finished third in 2:20.851.
Sin charged out in front with about five laps remaining and never lost the position.
In the women's 3,000m final, Choi came in first at 5:45.733, beating out Tao Jiaying of China, who finished in 5:46.781. Lee Eun-byul of South Korea took the third place at 5:46.949.
Choi claimed the lead with two laps left and didn't relinquish it the rest of the way.
Among other South Koreans on Saturday, Kwak Yoon-gy took the second place in the men's 1,000m final. Shim Suk-hee, a triple medalist at the 2014 Winter Games, finished fourth in the women's 1,000m final.
Scheduled for Sunday, the final day of the competition, are finals for the 500m, 3,000m and 5,000m relay for the men, and the 500m, 1,500m and 3,000m relay for the women.
