S. Korea, Uzbekistan draw in football friendly

All News 22:03 March 27, 2015

DAEJEON, March 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Uzbekistan played to a 1-1 draw in their football friendly here on Friday.

The teams traded a goal apiece in the first half at Daejeon World Cup Stadium in Daejeon, some 160 kilometers south of Seoul. South Korea now has nine wins, three draws and one loss in 13 meetings against Uzbekistan.

After a feeling-out period, South Korean captain Koo Ja-cheol put the home side on board in the 14th minute. Son Heung-min took the corner and Koo found open space to head it in past goalkeeper Eldorbek Suyunov.

It was Koo's first international goal since South Korea's group match against Algeria at last year's FIFA World Cup.

Koo tried to pick up his second goal 10 minutes later, but his header off a Kim Bo-kyung cross sailed over the bar.

Uzbekistan then leveled the score at the half-hour mark, capitalizing on a brief man advantage with South Korean forward Lee Jeong-hyeop on the sidelines to treat a bloodied forehead.

Sador Rashidov got deep into the zone on the left wing and sent a low cross for Zokhir Kuziboyev, with goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu caught well out of position. Kuziboyev only got a piece of the ball, but it went off defender Kim Kee-hee and trickled just over the goal line for the equalizer.

The two teams traded jabs in the second half but neither was able to deliver a knockout punch. In the 54th, Son Heung-min had a free kick opportunity from the top of the box but airmailed his shot.

In the 67th, Sanzhar Tursunov was left open to launch a driving shot from the top of the arc, forcing South Korean custodian Kim Seung-gyu to dive to his left for a key save.

South Korea's next friendly match will be against New Zealand in Seoul on Tuesday.
