Suwon knocked out of AFC Champions League

All News 21:05 May 26, 2015

SEOUL, May 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korean club Suwon Samsung Bluewings was knocked out of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League on Tuesday, despite an away victory.

Suwon defeated the home side Kashiwa Reysol 2-1 in the second leg of their round of 16 meeting, but was still eliminated as the Japanese club advanced with an edge in the aggregate score.

The clubs were tied 4-4 after their two matches but Kashiwa, which defeated Suwon 3-2 last week on the road, held the tiebreaker in away goals.

Suwon needed to win by at least two goals, and forward Jong Tae-se got Suwon off to an encouraging start with the opening goal in the 26th minute.

Suwon kept pushing around Kashiwa, and Ku Ja-ryong gave the South Korean club the crucial two-goal advantage in the 54th.

Instead of sitting back to protect the lead, Suwon kept attacking and paid dearly when Yusuke Kobayashi dashed Suwon's hopes by scoring off a rebound in the 65th.

Suwon's desperate attempts to restore a two-goal lead proved futile, as Kashiwa moved on to the final eight.
