By Yoo Jee-ho
GWANGJU, July 3 (Yonhap) -- Chung Hyeon, the highest-ranked South Korean male tennis player, was seeded No. 1 in the men's singles at the Summer Universiade on Friday.
Chung, ranked 79th in the world, got the bye to the second round. His first match will be on Sunday against the winner of the first round showdown between Raphael Hemmeler of Switzerland and Roman Trkulja of Canada. Neither player is ranked.
There are 185 players in the men's singles. All matches will be played at Jinwol International Tennis Court.
Chung, who won the men's doubles gold at the Asian Games last year, is coming off a first-round loss at Wimbledon. He was ranked as high as 69th in May.
"It means a great deal to me to represent the country at the Universiade," the 19-year-old said. "I will do my best to accomplish my goal."
In the women's singles, two South Koreans, Han Na-lae and Jang Su-jeong, were seeded fifth and sixth, respectively.
