(LEAD) Navy officer arrested for leaking military secrets to China
(ATTN: UPDATES with comment by Defense Security Command)
SEOUL, July 3 (Yonhap) -- A navy officer has been arrested on charges of leaking South Korea's military secrets to China, military sources said Friday.
The sources identified him as a lieutenant commander in the Defense Security Command, which is tasked with counterespionage, citing military prosecutors.
The officer is suspected of handing over materials deemed military secrets in return for receiving money after being won over to China by a Chinese agent while he was studying in China from 2009 to 2012, the source said, without giving any further details.
The Defense Security Command said it has asked military prosecutors to look into the case after receiving allegations that the officer passed military materials to a college student, whom South Korea presumed to be the Chinese agent.
