GWANGJU, July 4 (Yonhap) -- Host South Korea picked up two gold medals at the Summer Universiade on Saturday, along with three other medals on the first day of competition after the opening ceremony.
Cho Gu-ham was the country's first gold medalist, capturing the men's under-100㎏ title in judo over Clement Delvert of France. He had the honor of bringing home the first gold for the second straight Universiade.
In 2013, Cho won the title in the over-100㎏ category.
In fencing, Song Jong-hun captured the men's sabre title, with a 15-12 victory over Dmitry Danilenko of Russia.
South Korea is trying to win at least 25 gold medals here to finish among the top three in the medal table.
There were two more medals from judo on Saturday: Kim Min-jeong's silver in the women's over-78㎏, and Park Yu-jin's bronze in the women's under-78㎏.
South Korea's first medal came from diving, as Kim Na-mi picked up silver in the women's 1-meter springboard.
Kim scored 274.95 points to finish behind Zheng Shuangxue of China, who earned 286.20 points to claim the first gold medal of the Universiade. Sun Mengchen of China took the bronze with 272.85 points.
Medal rounds haven't yet begun in archery, but South Korean athletes were already in record-breaking form. Female recurve archer Ki Bo-bae set a world record in the individual ranking round with 686 points out of a possible 720, bettering the previous mark by four. Ki fired 42 10s, 14 of which were bull's-eyes.
South Koreans hogged the top three spots in the round, with Kang Chae-young shooting 679 points and Choi Mi-sun scoring 673 points.
The trio combined for a team world record of 2,038 points, beating the previous one also set by South Korea at the 2014 Archery World Cup by six points.
Elsewhere, South Korea clinched a quarterfinal berth in women's football with a 1-0 victory over Chinese Taipei. Kim So-yi scored on a rebound after Lee So-dam's free kick in the 40th minute, and South Korea held on for its second consecutive win at the Universiade.
South Korea, which defeated the Czech Republic 3-1 on Thursday, will finish no worse than second in Group A. It will face Ireland in the group finale on Monday.
In men's volleyball, South Korea suffered its second straight loss, falling to Argentina 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-19).
