SK Telecom to build LTE network reaching sea
SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom said Sunday it will build the world's first long-term evolution (LTE) network that can be operated on the ocean, and provide more stable communication environment for vessels.
SK Telecom said it plans to build the network system that can reach out to ships 100 kilometers off the coast, allowing them to receive the latest updates in weather and marine forecasts.
The new telecommunication system will also provide smaller ships, which are more vulnerable to accidents, with safer sailing environments, the company added.
The pilot run of the project will be conducted in May 2016. SK Telecom said it plans to develop high-tech antennas and router devices that can withstand strong wind and salinity.
The company added it will join forces with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries for the project.
