KT, NEC to join forces for 5G network

All News 11:47 August 05, 2015

SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's No. 2 mobile carrier KT Corp. said Wednesday it has agreed to join hands with Japan-based tech firm NEC Corp. to develop fifth-generation (5G) network technology.

Under the agreement, service provider KT and device maker NEC will cooperate in setting global standards of the 5G technology and jointly develop data transmission systems and antennas.

The 5G network refers to the next phase of mobile telecommunications standard that's faster than the current 4G system. In theory, it can reach a speed of 100 Gbps, or 300 times faster than the 3-band LTE-A service.

KT aims to introduce the new network at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games that will be held in PyeongChang, located some 180 kilometers east of Seoul.
