S. Korean Catholics to commemorate 1st anniv. of papal visit
SEOUL, Aug. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Catholics will commemorate the first anniversary of Pope Francis' visit to the country with various events, the local church said Wednesday.
Francis visited South Korea from Aug. 14 through Aug. 18 last year to attend a gathering of Asian Catholic youths and beatify Korean martyrs.
His 100 hours in South Korea left an impression on the Korean people as it was packed with meetings with the country's marginalized -- grieving families who lost their loved ones in April's ferry disaster, disabled people living in a rehabilitation center, North Korean defectors settled in the country and migrant workers mostly from Southeast Asian countries.
The Daejeon Diocese said it will hold an event to walk a pilgrim's route to the Haemi shrine in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, on Saturday next week. The pope led the closing Mass of the youth gathering at the shrine.
Some 3,000 invitees and pilgrims will walk the 4.5 kilometers from Hanseo University to the Haemi sanctuary during the event, according to the organizer.
The open car and other items used by the pope during the visit, as well as photos of the closing Mass, will be displayed at the shrine.
There will be a Mass on the feast day of the Assumption of Mary for Catholics at 3 p.m., the same day.
In Seoul, a private Catholic reading group will host a "talk concert" titled "Wake Up" with literary writer Gong Ji-young and two others among the speakers.
An exhibition of photos from Francis' five days in South Korea is currently open at the Seoul St. Mary's Hospital in southern Seoul.
