China denies reports of mobilizing forces to border during Korean tensions

All News 20:17 August 27, 2015

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Yonhap) -- China's defense ministry on Thursday denied reports that it sent additional tanks to a border with North Korea when tensions surged on the Korean Peninsula last week.

Some media reports said China might have sent additional tanks to the Chinese border city of Yanbian, citing pictures showing tanks rumbling through the street of Yanbian over the weekend.

China's defense ministry spokesman Yan Yujun said the media reports were "untrue."

The latest tensions on the Korean Peninsula were triggered by North Korea's landmine attack that maimed two South Korean soldiers.

Earlier this week, Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to defuse tensions that centered on South Korea halting anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts in exchange for the North expressing regret over the injuries South Korean soldiers.
