SEOUL, Aug. 30 (Yonhap) -- President Park Geun-hye on Sunday announced the birth of five puppies at Cheong Wa Dae, asking the public to help give them names.

The five puppies were born to her two pet dogs, Heemang and Saerom, last week, she said in a post on her Facebook page.

"The puppies can barely open their eyes and remain only by their mother's side but they were born very healthy and well," she wrote. "If all of you suggest names for our five Jindo puppies, it will be more meaningful and they will grow healthy and well."

Heemang and Saerom were given to Park as gifts by her neighbors when she left her home in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul, after her election win in December 2012. They are both of the Korean Jindo breed, known for their intelligence, bravery and fierce loyalty.

Heemang means "hope" in Korean.

Some four hours after the message was posted, it had 960 comments suggesting various names for the puppies, including the Korean words for "agreeable," "friendly," "happy," "love," and "unification."

Park's approval rating soared to 49 percent last week following a landmark inter-Korean deal that defused heightened tensions between South and North.

According to a poll released by Gallup Korea on Friday, 49 percent approved of Park's job performance, up 15 percentage points from a week earlier.

The survey was conducted on 1,004 adults between Tuesday and Thursday and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
