China hopes Koreas produce 'fruitful results' at next month's talks
BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Yonhap) -- China on Friday welcomed the agreement by South and North Korea to hold vice minister-level talks next month, voicing hope that the upcoming talks could produce "fruitful results."
Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to hold talks on Dec. 11 in North Korea's border city of Kaesong, in a fresh bid to ease cross-border tensions, after concluding a working-level meeting earlier in the day at the truce village of Panmunjom.
Asked about the agreement, China's foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular press briefing, "We welcome this consensus reached between the two sides."
"We hope that the intergovernmental talks between the two sides can convene smoothly and lead to fruitful results," Hong said.
Following a military standoff in August caused by North Korea's land-mine attack on South Korean soldiers, Seoul and Pyongyang agreed on a set of reconciliation measures, including the resumption of higher-level talks and last month's reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.
