Top S. Korea, U.S. diplomats to discuss N. Korea nuke issues
SEOUL, May 6 (Yonhap) -- The foreign ministers from South Korea and the United States will have phone talks later this week to discuss issues over North Korea including its latest party congress, Seoul's foreign ministry said Friday.
Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will discuss North Korea's nuclear issues and sanctions against Pyongyang over the phone on Saturday 9:00 a.m. (local time), an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The meeting comes as North Korea kicked off its rare party congress for the first time in 36 years.
The congress of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) came as North Korea was slapped with tougher sanctions by the U.N. Security Council in March over its nuclear test and long-range rocket launch early this year.
Seoul and Washington are expected to discuss the congress as well as ways to continue international sanctions on the communists' regime, policy watchers said. The meeting was proposed by the U.S., diplomatic sources said.
