SEOUL, May 24 (Yonhap) -- A pair of high-profile international events on broadcasting opened in South Korea Tuesday, drawing hundreds of senior Asian officials, scholars and media workers.

South Korean Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning Choi Yang-hee hosted the telecommunication and IT ministers' meeting in Songdo, west of Seoul, also joined by top policymakers from eight other Asian nations: Cambodia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Vietnam, Laos, Nepal, Samoa and Sri Lanka.

They shared experience and expertise about the development of the broadcasting industry and discussed ways to cooperate to narrow the broadcasting divide in the Asia-Pacific region and support the production of broadcasting content, according to the ministry.

Choi also attended the Asia Media Summit (AMS) that opened at the same venue for a three-day run.

With the theme of "New Horizons for Media Content: Asia and Beyond," this year's session attracted more than 200 people from 49 countries.

"It's important to produce content to be compatible with the evolution of broadcasting technology and services," Choi said in his welcoming speech.

This week's event will serve as an important chance for the participating nations to enhance their common understanding on the need for regional cooperation for the development of the broadcasting sector, he added.
