(LEAD) Budget carrier Jin Air to start Incheon-Cairns service
(ATTN: UPDATES with comments by Australian tourism official)
SEOUL, June 28 (Yonhap) -- Jin Air Co., the budget unit of Korean Air Lines Co., said Tuesday that it will launch a flight service to Cairns, a holiday destination on the northeast coast of Australia, later this year.
Jin Air said that it will deploy its B777-200ER aircraft equipped with 393 seats on the Incheon-Cairns route twice a week for about two months, starting Dec. 14.
The carrier said it will decide whether to keep the route after the temporary service is over.
Leanne Coddington, CEO of Tourism and Events Queensland, said her agency "is committed to inspiring more visitors to come to Queensland by increasing access into the state’s international ports through the Attracting Aviation Investment Fund and other airline incentives."
Cairns is the gateway to Queensland's tropical north.
Tourism and Events Queensland is the Queensland Government's lead marketing, destination and experience development and major events agency, according to its website.
Australia is a popular holiday destination for South Koreans.
About 251,600 South Koreans visited Australia between March 2015 and April 2016, up 17.5 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the Australian government.
