Hyundai, Kia see U.S. sales grow 7 pct in June
WASHINGTON, July 1 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate, Kia Motors Corp., saw their combined sales in the United States grow 7 percent in June, thanks to a 16 percent jump in Kia's sales, industry data showed Friday.
The two South Korean auto giants sold a combined 130,083 units in the U.S. last month, up from 121,639 units during the same period last year, the data showed.
Hyundai's sales remained flat, logging 67,511 units last month compared with last year's 67,502. But Kia's sales jumped a whopping 16 percent to 62,572 units from 54,137 of last year, according to the data.
Kia said the January-June sales of 328,327 units marked the best-ever first half sales.
Sport utility vehicles led the rise in Kia's sales.
The Sportage sold 8,549 units, a sharp 140 percent increase from 3,550 last year, while the Sorento sold 12,118 units, up 35 percent from last year's 8,967 units. Sales of the compact car Rio also more than doubled to 5,238 units from last year's 2,420.
Hyundai's sales were also driven by SUVs.
The Tucson sold 7,193 units, a nearly 100 percent rise from 3,606 of last year, while the Santa Fe's sales also jumped 76 percent to 18,345 units.
