Son Yeon-jae takes two medals at FIG World Cup in Russia

SEOUL, July 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korean rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae has captured two medals at an International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) competition in Russia as she gears up for the Rio de Janeiro Summer Games.

Son won the silver medal in hoop and took the bronze medal in ribbon at the FIG World Cup in Kazan, Russia, on Saturday (local time). She has claimed at least one medal at each of the six World Cups she has competed in this season.

In hoop, Son finished second with 18.600 points, 0.100 point above the individual all-around gold medalist Margarita Mamun of Russia. Mamun's compatriot and rival, Yana Kudryavtseva, was the winner in hoop with 19.200.

In ribbon, Son was third with a score of 18.500. Mamun took the gold after posting 19.200, followed by Melitina Staniouta of Belarus at 18.550.

In ball and clubs, Son came up short of the podium. The 22-year-old scored 18.600 in ball and 18.650 in clubs.

On Friday, Son earned a career-high 74.900 points in the individual all-around but failed to win a medal.

Son is expected to have her final Olympic tune-up at the season's last World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, next week.

Son, the 2014 Asian Games all-around champion, is trying to become the first South Korean rhythmic gymnast to win an Olympic medal in August. She ranked fifth in the individual all-around at the 2012 London Olympics.
