JEONJU, South Korea, July 26 (Yonhap) -- The central government has decided to support efforts to host the 2023 World Scout Jamboree by the reclaimed Saemangeum in the country's North Jeolla Province, a provincial official said Tuesday.

The decision was made at a meeting of the finance ministry's international events screening panel the previous day, which concluded that the Scout event will be conducive to the future and development of the reclaimed land, the official said.

"With the decision, we expect to receive aggressive support from the gender equality and family ministry in charge of such affairs and to secure some 5 billion won (US$4.40 million) in subsidies from the state coffers," the official said.

Some 50,000 Scouts from about 160 countries are expected to take part in the 25th World Jamboree, whose project cost is estimated at around 49.1 billion won -- 31 billion won in entry fees, 5.4 billion won in state expenses and 12.7 billion won in provincial expenditures -- according to the official.

The South Korean province and Poland were chosen as candidates for the 2023 event last September, and a final winner will be decided at the 41st general assembly of the World Organization of the Scout Movement set for next August in Azerbaijan.

North Jeolla Province and the Korea Scout Association have been promoting Saemangeum, a venue for the event, in Europe, Africa, and Central and South America since early this year.

"We'll surely succeed in hosting the event if the central government takes the lead (in introducing the event)," Provincial Governor Song Ha-jin said.

Completed in 2006, the reclaimed Saemangeum, some 280 kilometers south of Seoul, spans 40,200 hectares and boasts the world's longest seawall at 33.9 kilometers.
