Indian suspect indicted over stolen marine facility technologies
SEOUL, March 27 (Yonhap) -- An Indian national has been indicted on charges of stealing classified marine plant documents and technologies from two South Korean companies, prosecutors said Monday.
The 48-year-old suspect has been arrested for siphoning off various marine facility designs and documents from a medium-sized company between February 2014 and January 2016. He got himself hired at the company by fabricating a master's degree and other documents, according to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office.
The suspect is also accused of stealing offshore oil drilling technologies, which are protected by the government under a law on core national technologies, from a domestic conglomerate which had a subcontracting arrangement with the mid-sized company, according to prosecutors. The names of the companies involved were withheld.
"The damage from the leak is incalculable, considering the possible decrease in sales and profits down the road," a prosecution official said, asking not to be named.
Prosecutors said they are looking into how the suspect used the stolen information and technologies and if the person had any accomplices.
