Presidential envoy to ASEAN to begin tour on Sunday
SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- A newly named presidential envoy to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will begin his tour of the region on Sunday.
Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, tapped by President Moon Jae-in on Friday as his special envoy to ASEAN, will depart for the Philippines on Sunday, Seoul Metropolitan Government said Saturday. The Philippines is the current rotating chair of the ASEAN.
Park will then visit Indonesia and Vietnam. In those stops, Park will deliver letters from Moon and speak to his counterparts about South Korea's willingness to further improve ties with ASEAN.
ASEAN, which also counts the likes of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand as its members, is South Korea's second-largest trading partner.
Cheong Wa Dae earlier noted that Park's appointment reflected the importance the new president attaches to Southeast Asian nations. The president has vowed to strengthen the country's diplomatic relations with ASEAN to the level of those with four global powers, including the United States.
Park is the seventh special envoy to be named by Moon since the new president took office last Wednesday.
Those appointed earlier included envoys to the United States, China, Japan and Russia.
