Samsung tops global smartphone market in Q2

SEOUL, Aug. 17 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. topped the global smartphone market in the second quarter, data showed Thursday, with the Galaxy S8 series emerging as the most-sold Android-powered models.

According to the data compiled by industry tracker Strategy Analytics, the South Korean tech giant stood as the No. 1 player in the area with a combined market share of 22.1 percent.

Samsung's U.S. archrival Apple Inc. followed with 11.4 percent. China-based Huawei Technologies Co. and OPPO Electronics Corp. trailed with 10.7 percent and 8.2 percent, while Xiaomi took up 6.4 percent.

The global market for smartphones over the second quarter is estimated at 360 million units, the industry tracker added.

By product, the South Korean tech giant's Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus posted shipments of 10.2 million units and 9 million units, respectively, each accounting for 2.8 percent and 2.5 percent of the market over the cited period.

Apple's iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus posted sales of 16.9 million and 15.1 million units, respectively, over the April-June period, standing as the most-sold smartphones around the globe. The two models took up 4.7 percent and 4.2 percent of the market each.

China-based Xiaomi Inc.'s Redmi 4A came next with a shipment of 5.5 million units and a market share of 1.5 percent.
