Seoul's new nuke envoy vows to supplement U.N. sanctions on N.K.
SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's new chief envoy on the North Korean nuclear issue said Friday that his government will consider its own measures to supplement the United Nations Security Council's sanctions resolutions against North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.
South Korea "will put priority on UNSC sanctions, but will also review whether there would be any measures to supplement them," Lee Do-hoon, the incoming special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, told reporters.
"Basically, unilateral sanctions get to cover up holes left by UNSC sanctions and there's a need to study what measures would be possible," Lee noted.
"Time is running out as North Korea is nearing the final stages of the completion of its nuclear development as it claims," the nuclear envoy stressed, adding that he will work toward producing "tangible" progress on the North Korean nuclear weapons front within his term.
"What I think the most important thing is (making) policy that many people support," he also said, pledging to accept input from the public in forming North Korea policy.
