S. Korean defense chief leaves for ASEAN forum in Philippines
SEOUL, Oct. 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo headed to the Philippines on Sunday for an international security meeting led by Southeast Asian countries.
The two-day ADMM-Plus meeting will open Monday in Clark, Pampanga, two hours north of Manila, and will bring together the defense chiefs of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and eight dialogue partners. ADMM is the abbreviation for the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting.
The partner nations are South Korea, the U.S., China, Japan, Russia, Australia, India and New Zealand.
On the sidelines of the event, Song plans to hold trilateral talks with his American and Japanese counterparts -- James Mattis and Itsunori Onodera.
Song "plans to discuss pending security issues on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia (at) the plenary session of the ADMM-Plus," according to his ministry.
"It's expected to serve as an opportunity to strengthen international cooperation for the denuclearization of North Korea and deepen defense ties with the Asia-Pacific nations," added the ministry.
The ADMM-Plus, launched in 2010, is held every two or three years. This year's session is the fourth of its kind.
