USS Nimitz arrives in Pacific amid N.K. tensions

All News 23:32 October 25, 2017

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (Yonhap) -- A U.S. aircraft carrier arrived in the Pacific Wednesday, joining two other warships in the region as tensions with North Korea run high.

The USS Nimitz deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet's area of operations (AOO) after completing operations in the Middle East, the U.S. Navy said in a news release. The 7th Fleet covers Korean waters.

"While in the 7th Fleet, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (NIMSG) is scheduled for a port visit and will be ready to support operations throughout the AOO before transiting back to their respective homeports," it said. The group includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton, and guided-missile destroyers USS Howard, USS Shoup, USS Pinckney and USS Kidd.

Two other aircraft carriers -- USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Ronald Reagan -- are also in the region. Roosevelt entered the western Pacific on Monday, while Reagan is homeported in Japan.

The deployment of such powerful assets is seen as a show of force against North Korean provocations as the regime presses ahead with its nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
