(2nd LD) Actor Kim Joo-hyuk dies in car accident

SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Yonhap) -- Popular actor Kim Joo-hyuk died in a car crash Monday, police said. He was 45.

The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. in southern Seoul when Kim's Mercedes SUV rear-ended a vehicle in front it before smashing into a wall at an apartment complex and rolling down stairs.

Kim was immediately taken to KonKuk University Medical Center, but died.

"Kim was unconscious when he was being transferred. Hospital officials told us that they conducted CPR on him, but he died at 6:30 p.m.," a police official said.

Kim's car was heavily damaged as it overturned, and it was around 5:07 p.m. that he was rescued out of the vehicle, police said.

"There was smoke from the engine of Kim's car, but there was no fire," an official said.

The driver, whose sedan was hit from behind by Kim's car, told police that when he was pulling over after being rear-ended by the Mercedes, he saw the Mercedes' driver holding his chest before hitting his car again and then smashing into a wall.

Police are trying to determine the exact cause of the accident while trying to secure security video footage as well as dashboard camera videos.

Kim debuted as a SBS TV actor in 1998. He initially received attention as son of late veteran actor Kim Moo-saeng but soon built up his acting credentials through diverse movies and TV shows.

He gained popularity with his humorous and warm charm appearing in romantic comedies such as "Singles" (2003), "When Romance Meets Destiny" (2005), "Blue Swallow" (2005), and "My Wife Got Married" (2008).

Most recently, he made his villain debut in "Confidential Assignment" (2017) and "The Tooth and the Nail" (2017). On the small screen, he appeared in "Lovers in Prague" (2005), "Warrior K" (2012) and "The Legendary Doctor - Hur Jun" (2013).

He graduated from Dongguk University's Department of Theater and Film.
