Presidential office set to reform investigation agencies

All News 12:00 January 14, 2018

SEOUL, Jan. 14 (Yonhap) -- The presidential office Cheong Wa Dae was set to unveil its measures to rearrange or limit investigative powers of state agencies Sunday in a move partly aimed at preventing abuse of power by such government institutions, including the spy agency.

The measures will be announced at 1:30 p.m. by Cho Kuk, the senior presidential secretary for civil affairs, Cheong Wa Dae said.

The measures will likely affect the police, prosecution and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) that has already been told to hand over its function as an anti-espionage instrument to other state investigation agencies.

Reforming such agencies was one of the key election pledges of President Moon Jae-in as a way of preventing abuse of power. NIS, for instance, is suspected of having interfered in various elections, including the 2012 presidential election, in which the ousted former leader Park Geun-hye was elected. The spy agency is also facing a prosecution investigation over allegations of offering monthly bribes to the former president.
