WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping voiced hope that resumed dialogue between South and North Korea could lead to a change in the regime's provocative behavior, the White House said Tuesday.

The leaders held a phone call Monday and discussed the latest developments on the Korean Peninsula, including the resumption last week of high-level dialogue between the Koreas.

They "expressed hope that it might prompt a change in North Korea's destructive behavior," the White House said in a statement.

Trump also "committed to sustain the United States-led global campaign of maximum pressure to compel North Korea to commit to denuclearization," it said.

While discussing bilateral trade issues, Trump "expressed disappointment" over the U.S.'s growing trade deficit with China and "made clear that the situation is not sustainable."
