SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) -- The top diplomats of South Korea and Britain met in Canada to discuss North Korea's nuclear program, ongoing inter-Korean talks and other issues of mutual concern, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and her British counterpart Boris Johnson met on Tuesday (local time) on the sidelines of a multilateral foreign ministers' meeting in Vancouver.

Kang took note of Britain's "constructive contribution" to sending out a "balanced" message that a bright future awaits North Korea should it make the right choice with regard to its nuclear programs, the ministry said.

She also emphasized that Seoul will build on the ongoing inter-Korean talks to create an environment for resumption of dialogue aimed at peacefully resolving the North's nuclear issue.

South Korea and North Korea have been discussing the North's participation in next month's PyeongChang Winter Olympics after years of frozen ties and the absence of any contact.

Johnson hoped that the inter-Korean talks will serve as a good opportunity to add momentum to efforts to resolve the North's nuclear issue and vowed to provide unwavering support for South Korea in its pursuit of a peaceful resolution of the nuclear stalemate, the ministry said.

The two also agreed to work together closely in trade and investment even after Britain's departure from the European Union and promised to advance cooperation for their mutual benefit in the nuclear power sector.
