SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) -- The top diplomats of South Korea, the United States and Japan reaffirmed their shared goal of peacefully resolving North Korea's nuclear problem during a trilateral meeting in Vancouver, the foreign ministry here said Wednesday.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha held talks with her U.S. and Japanese counterparts Rex Tillerson and Taro Kono on the sidelines of a forum of foreign ministers from 20 countries that fought alongside South Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War, according to the ministry.

Kang emphasized the importance of pushing for denuclearization and inter-Korean talks at the same time, an approach that drew support from the U.S. and Japan.

They agreed to keep a united front in achieving their shared goal of peacefully resolving the North's nuclear problem, the ministry said.

They also shared the view that the ongoing inter-Korean dialogue is timely and agreed to maintain close coordination, so as to make use of the new momentum to contribute to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The trilateral meeting comes amid easing tension after South and North Korea held high-level talks last week for the first time in more than two years to discuss the North's participation in the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

On Wednesday, the North offered to send a 230-member cheering squad to the Winter Olympics and to use a land route for its delegation's trip to the South.
