SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's foreign ministry on Friday called on missionaries dispatched overseas to take extra safety precaution amid increasing terror threats to civilians.

In a meeting in Seoul with religious organizations, the ministry urged their overseas missionaries to respect local laws and customs and refrain from traveling to countries where missionary activities are banned.

They were also asked to stay away from dangerous countries and regions, including the China-North Korea border, where they could be abducted or victimized by other types of terror.

Currently, there are about 37,000 missionaries working overseas, according to the ministry. The warnings came as terror threats have been mounting on such soft targets as civilians.
