SEOUL, April 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's international air passenger traffic rose 17 percent last month from a year earlier on increased demand for air travel, government data showed Friday.

The number of international passengers to and from South Korea came to 7.1 million in March, up from 6.1 million tallied a year earlier, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Traffic to and from China in March marked the first monthly on-year growth after 12 straight months of decline, jumping 10.4 percent during the cited period.

Yet it still fell short of the comparable figure for March 2016, before China's ban on Korea-bound group tours was enacted, according to the ministry.

Passenger volume on most other routes rose, with those to and from Japan, Southeast Asia and North America climbing 22.1 percent, 19.7 percent and 16.3 percent, respectively, it said.

Domestic air passenger traffic edged up 1.6 percent on-year to 2.48 million and air cargo traffic was up 3.2 percent to 388,000 tons during the cited period, according to the ministry.

"Air passenger traffic is expected to continue growing on the back of the stable operation of the newly launched second passenger terminal at Incheon International Airport, coupled with the recovery of traffic to and from China and the rising demand for domestic and overseas travel in the spring season," a ministry official said.
