SKC breaks ground on plant for transparent polyimide film
SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- SKC Co., a South Korean maker of chemicals and film products, said on Tuesday that it has broken ground on a plant to produce transparent polyimide film, a key material for making foldable displays.
The plant in Jincheon, about 90 kilometers south of Seoul, is set to mass-produce transparent polyimide (PI) films beginning in October 2019, the company said.
Transparent PI film has a hard surface like glass but is foldable and leaves no trace even when it is folded multiple times. It has emerged as an important material that can replace existing glass sheets in next-generation displays like foldable or rollable displays, according to SKC.
SKC said its film processing affiliate, SKC Hi-Tech & Marketing, will process transparent PI films into hard coating films.
