SEOUL, June 21 (Yonhap) -- The Presidential Security Service purchased four drones for security purposes in 2016, but lost all of them as the manufacturer closed without returning the drones sent in for reprogramming, the state auditor said Thursday.

According to the Board of Audit and Inspection, the security service spent 8.35 million won (US$7,520) to buy the unmanned aerial vehicles in December 2016, but sent them back to the manufacturer for reprogramming so that they can fly over areas around the presidential office.

All drones sold in South Korea are programmed to restrict flight over Cheong Wa Dae. The security service knew the restriction can be remotely lifted, but still handed them over to the manufacturer as the company insisted on sending them in, according to the BAI.

However, the security service didn't get the drones back as the manufacturer closed its doors, the BAI said.
