Xiaomi launches Redmi Note 5 in S. Korea
SEOUL, July 16 (Yonhap) -- Chinese tech giant Xiaomi Corp. said Monday it has started selling the Redmi Note 5 in South Korea, the first Xiaomi device to be officially sold by local mobile carriers.
Xiaomi's official South Korean partner G-mobi Korea said the Redmi Note 5 is a smartphone equipped with high-end features and comes with a reasonable price tag of 299,000 won (US$264).
Available through SK Telecom Co. and KT Corp. starting Monday, the Redmi Note 5 comes with a 5.99-inch display, along with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 and 4GB RAM. The storage capacity stands at 64GB.
The smartphone comes with a 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel dual camera, along with the 13-megapixel selfie lens. The battery capacity stands at 4,000 mAh, which can normally last for around two days.
The release of the Redmi Note 5 is significant as Samsung Electronics Co. has been losing its presence in the overseas market amid the rise of Chinese players releasing price-competitive models against the Galaxy series.
According to the data compiled by industry tracker Strategy Analytics, Samsung Electronics took up 1.3 percent of the Chinese market in the first quarter of 2018.
