Gov't picks Vice Adm. Sim as new Chief of Naval Operations

SEOUL, July 16 (Yonhap) -- The government on Monday promoted Vice Adm. Sim Seung-seob, strategic planning chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to four-star rank and designated him as the new Chief of Naval Operations, the defense ministry said.

President Moon Jae-in will officially appoint him following Cabinet deliberations slated for Tuesday, it said.

Sim will replace Um Hyun-seong who is set to leave office this week after more than two years of service at the helm of the Navy.

"He is equipped with the professionalism needed to ensure the military preparedness posture and capabilities to command maritime operations, and moreover, the strategic knowledge in preparation for the future security environment and ability to foster military cohesion," the ministry said in a press release.
